Year 4 Impact Report – Academic year 2023-2024
In year 4, CREATE work spanned the spectrum of early childhood mobility, the intersection of race and disability, and the opportunities and risks generative AI presents to people with disabilities. Our faculty, students, and postdocs received recognition at prestigious conferences in the form of 57 papers. We welcomed a new Director of Education. And we helped advance accessibility research through: community and industry input, contributions to new federal rules for accessibility, campus support for people with disabilities, and A11y in Action resources on our website.

Year 3 – Academic year 2022-2023
In Year 3, we fostered research and education excellence through an added focus on the understudied area of Race, Technology and Disability. We grew our partnerships in depth and breadth and meaningful translation results. We outline new goals to further strategic applications in priority areas and to move the field of accessibility forward in AI+Accessibility, connecting projects with disabled perspectives and study participants, training and supporting accessibility researchers, and fundraising. Year 2 – Academic year 2021-2022
In our second year, we introduced 12 new faculty members, 4 postdocs, and a new community engagement manager. CREATE researchers published 41 papers on high-impact, collaborative work and translated research into action via several applications. We brought accessibility into more courses, added 6 new Ph.D. students, and supported students through grants and teaching. And we advocated for inclusive practices for hiring, interviewing and lecturing; biometric data fairness, and support for disabled faculty and students. Year 1 – Academic year 2020-2021
CREATE’s first year yielded 55 research papers on accessible technology, the launch of a collaboration with UW I-LABS, new postdocs, and numerous awards. We supported students with mini-grants, study away programs, and a seminar on accessibility and race. CREATE hosted several Reimagining Mobility conversations with 150 members and held our first Community Day. We translated research to an app on the Google Play store and made progress toward our five-year, $10M goal with corporate donors and a training grant. The CREATE Advisory Board was formed and we defined leadership and membership structures. View or download the Year 1 Impact Report (PDF on Google Drive).
