We are happy to announce that Amy J. Ko has joined CREATE leadership as Director of Education.
Dr. Ko studies equitable, liberatory learning about computing and information in schools and beyond. Her work draws from human-computer interaction, computing education, software engineering, programming languages, learning sciences, behavioral sciences, sociology, and more.
Ko has supported the AccessComputing team in broadening participation in computing by students with disabilities, fostering supports and awareness about access needs. She co-edited Teaching Accessible Computing, a book that supports computing educators in teaching about accessibility in computer sciences classes, read by tens of thousands of educators globally. And she has co-designed new access technologies, including more accessible educational programming languages.
In her role as an associate dean, she works to make systems changes at the UW for more accessible digital content, less ableist teaching, and more disability justice-focused learning about computing and information.

“In my current role as the Information School’s Associate Dean for Academics, I have the privilege of creating spaces for learning of all kinds about information. And in my new role as Director of Education for CREATE, I hope to do the same, creating new spaces for learning about accessibility, disability, and accessible computing technologies.”

While she does not yet identify as disabled, Ko emphasizes the word “yet,” knowing that abilities change throughout our lives and how we communicate with others and access the world changes as well. “I’ve tried to channel that perspective into accessibility advocacy over the past decade,” says Ko.
With CREATE, Ko hopes to extend this allyship further — for the broader region, country, and world — and encourages anyone to reach out to her for conversation about how to build more accessible futures. “Reach out and let’s chat!” Ko encourages.
